Why Your Phone Camera Sometimes Struggles to Focus

You point your phone at a subject, but the image keeps shifting between sharp and blurry. Perhaps the camera focuses on the background instead of the object in front of you, or it refuses to make a very close subject look crisp. These problems make more sense once you know what autofocus is trying to do. A phone camera does not simply make the whole scene sharp. It has to decide where to focus, adjust its optics for that distance, and determine whether the result is good enough. Low light, low contrast, movement, reflections, and subjects that are too close can all make that job harder.
