What Camera Megapixels Mean and Why More Is Not Always More Detail

A phone with a 50-megapixel camera sounds as though it should produce more detailed photos than one with a 12-megapixel camera. Sometimes it can. But the megapixel number by itself does not tell you how sharp, clean, or natural the finished picture will look. The reason is simple: megapixels describe how many picture elements an image contains, not how well the camera captured the information in those elements. The lens, image sensor, light, focus, movement, exposure, and software processing all affect how much useful detail reaches the final photo.
