Two people can use the same pair of in-ear earbuds and hear noticeably different sound. Even one person may hear stronger bass in one ear, weaker noise cancellation after changing ear tips, or a thinner sound when an earbud works loose during a walk.

The earbuds have not necessarily changed. The connection between each earbud and your ear has.

For in-ear designs that use silicone, foam, or similar tips, fit affects both acoustics and comfort. A suitable tip helps the earbud sit securely and can form a useful acoustic seal around the ear canal. Understanding that seal explains why changing tip size or repositioning an earbud can sometimes make a larger difference than changing an equalizer setting.

The simple mental model: the earbud and your ear form a small acoustic system

An in-ear earbud does not produce sound into an unlimited open space. Its driver—the part that turns an electrical audio signal into sound—works close to the entrance of your ear canal.

When the tip fits well, the earbud, tip, and ear canal form a more controlled path for sound. When there is a substantial gap, some of the pressure changes created by the driver can leak through that opening instead of acting on the air in the canal as intended.

That leakage is especially important for low frequencies. Bass reproduction in many sealed or partly sealed in-ear designs depends strongly on the acoustic seal. A poor seal can therefore make the same earbud sound lighter or thinner even though its electronics and volume setting have not changed.

The useful chain is:

fit changes → acoustic seal changes → sound leakage changes → the frequency balance you hear can change

This is not simply a matter of an earbud being closer to the eardrum. The way the tip seals and positions the earbud also changes the acoustic conditions in which the driver operates.

Why a poor seal often reduces bass first

Sound is a pattern of changing air pressure. At low frequencies, the pressure changes are relatively slow. In an in-ear earphone designed to work with a seal, an unintended opening gives those pressure changes another path through which to escape.

Imagine trying to inflate a soft bag that has a small opening. The analogy is not exact—an earbud is producing alternating sound pressure rather than steadily filling a bag—but it illustrates why an air path matters. If pressure can readily leak away, it becomes harder to maintain the pressure variation the system was designed to create.

This is why an earbud can still produce clear voices and high-frequency detail while sounding unexpectedly weak in the bass. The result depends on the earbud design and the size of the leak, so the change is not identical for every model.

A useful everyday test is to gently reseat an earbud while familiar audio is playing at a moderate volume. If the bass becomes much fuller when the fit improves, the previous position probably was not providing the acoustic seal that the earbud expects.

Do not push an earbud painfully deep to achieve this. A secure, comfortable fit is the goal, not maximum insertion depth.

Ear-tip size is about sealing your ear, not choosing the largest tip

Many in-ear earbuds include several tip sizes because ear canals differ in shape and size. The two ears of one person can differ as well.

A tip that is too small may fail to contact the ear canal well enough, allowing the earbud to move or leaving an acoustic leak. A tip that is too large can be uncomfortable, may not seat at the intended position, and can sometimes be pushed out by the ear rather than staying secure.

The most suitable size is therefore the one that produces a stable, comfortable fit and an effective seal for your ear. That may mean using different tip sizes on the left and right earbuds.

Tip material can matter too. Silicone and foam tips deform differently and can contact the ear canal in different ways. Manufacturers may offer multiple materials or shapes for this reason. Changing material can affect comfort, isolation, and sometimes the perceived sound, but there is no single tip material that is best for every person or every earbud.

Use tips that fit the earbud nozzle correctly. A tip that is not designed to attach securely can come loose, change the intended acoustic path, or remain in the ear when the earbud is removed.

Fit also changes how much outside sound reaches you

The ear tip has another job: it can physically reduce outside sound before any electronics are involved. This is called passive isolation.

A well-fitting tip creates a physical barrier between the ear canal and the surrounding air. It does not make the environment silent, and different frequencies are reduced by different amounts, but it can lower the level of outside sound reaching the ear. Earbud makers commonly provide several tip sizes specifically to improve fit and isolation.

A poor seal can therefore create two changes at once: less bass from the earbud and more outside noise entering the ear. In a bus or aircraft cabin, that combination can make music seem particularly thin because low-frequency environmental noise is also competing with the audio.

This can tempt you to raise the volume. Checking the fit first is often more useful than immediately increasing loudness.

Active noise cancellation also depends on fit

Active noise cancellation, or ANC, uses microphones and signal processing to reduce unwanted sound. It is different from passive isolation, but the two work together in many in-ear products.

ANC does not make ear-tip fit irrelevant. Manufacturers of noise-cancelling earbuds commonly advise users to select tips that fit properly because an unsuitable fit can reduce the noise-cancelling effect.

The reason is practical: the noise-cancelling system is operating in the acoustic environment created by the earbud and your ear. If outside sound can enter freely through a poor seal, the total reduction you experience can be weaker even if the electronic cancellation itself is functioning normally.

Fit is not the only factor that determines ANC performance. Noise characteristics, microphone placement, processing, listening mode, and the earbud’s design also matter. Active cancellation also tends to behave differently across frequencies. A good seal should therefore be viewed as one necessary part of the system rather than a guarantee that all noise will disappear.

Why the left and right earbuds can sound different

If one side sounds fuller than the other, it is easy to assume that one earbud is faulty. A hardware problem is possible, but fit is worth checking first.

One ear canal may need a different tip size or insertion angle. An earbud can also loosen on one side because of movement, the shape of the outer ear, or how the tip contacts the canal. If that side loses its seal, bass and isolation may drop while the other side continues to sound normal.

Before changing audio balance settings, compare the fit on both sides. Try the available tip sizes according to the manufacturer’s instructions and check whether the difference follows the fit.

If one side remains noticeably quieter or more muffled regardless of fit, inspect the earbud as the manufacturer recommends. Earwax or debris on a protective mesh can obstruct sound on some models. Cleaning methods vary by product, so use the maker’s instructions rather than inserting sharp objects into the nozzle or applying liquids that are not approved for the material.

Persistent one-sided hearing differences can also come from your ears rather than the earbuds. If the difference appears with multiple headphones or is accompanied by hearing symptoms, changing ear tips is not a substitute for appropriate medical advice.

A seal should be secure, not uncomfortable

A common mistake is treating stronger pressure as proof of a better fit. Comfort matters because a tip that hurts, creates excessive pressure, or will not stay in place is not a practical fit.

A suitable fit usually has several signs:

  • the earbud remains stable during normal movement;
  • bass does not disappear with small head movements;
  • outside sound is reduced consistently on both sides;
  • the tip does not cause pain or strong pressure;
  • the earbud can be inserted and removed as the manufacturer intends.

Some earbuds or companion apps include a fit or seal test. Such a test can be useful when available, but it should complement rather than override comfort. Software can evaluate only what the particular product is designed to measure.

Why pressing an earbud inward is not a reliable long-term fix

You may notice that bass suddenly returns when you hold an earbud firmly in place. That is a useful diagnostic clue: your hand may be temporarily improving the seal or changing the earbud’s position.

It does not mean you should wear the earbud under constant pressure. If sound improves only while you press it inward, try another supplied tip size or shape and reseat the earbud normally. The goal is for the tip to maintain an appropriate seal without help from your hand.

Likewise, if an earbud repeatedly loosens during exercise, simply increasing volume does not address the cause. A more stable fit can improve both the sound and the consistency of what you hear as you move.

Fit cannot fix every sound problem

A good seal is important, but it is not an explanation for every difference in sound.

The recording itself, equalizer settings, hearing differences, Bluetooth codec behavior, volume, earbud tuning, blocked meshes, damaged drivers, and software processing can all affect what reaches your ears. Open-fit earbuds are also deliberately designed not to seal the ear canal in the same way, so advice about achieving a tight seal does not apply to them in the same manner.

This distinction matters when troubleshooting. If a sealed in-ear model suddenly loses bass after being repositioned, fit is a strong suspect. If the sound is distorted at every position, or one earbud is silent, the problem likely needs a different explanation.

Start with fit before changing the sound settings

When sealed in-ear earbuds sound thin, uneven, or less isolated than expected, begin with the physical fit. Seat each earbud as its manufacturer recommends, try the supplied tip sizes, and judge both comfort and stability. It is normal for the two ears to need different sizes.

Then listen to familiar audio at a sensible volume. A consistent fit should produce a more consistent tonal balance as you move your head. If the sound changes dramatically whenever the earbud shifts, the seal is still likely changing.

Only after the physical fit is stable does it make sense to fine-tune equalizer settings. Equalization can change the signal sent to the driver, but it cannot physically close an unintended gap between the tip and your ear.

The practical takeaway

With sealed in-ear earbuds, the ear tip is part of the acoustic system, not just a cushion for comfort. Its fit affects how sound pressure is maintained in the ear canal, how much outside noise enters, and how effectively noise-cancelling earbuds can perform as a complete system.

That is why the same earbuds can sound full and balanced in one position but thin a few millimetres later. Before assuming that weak bass or uneven noise cancellation requires new hardware or aggressive audio settings, check the simplest variable first: whether each earbud fits your ear securely and comfortably.
