You may open your router’s device list and find a phone or laptop under an unfamiliar address. A network may also treat a device you have used before as if it were new. One common reason is a feature often called a private Wi-Fi address, randomized MAC address, or similar name.

The feature changes the identifier your device presents on a Wi-Fi network. It does not give the device a new internet connection, and it does not make the device anonymous. Its main purpose is narrower: reducing how easily one persistent Wi-Fi identifier can be used to recognize the same device across networks or over time.

Understanding that distinction helps explain both the privacy benefit and the occasional surprises in router settings.

A Wi-Fi connection needs a local device address

When a phone, laptop, or tablet communicates over Wi-Fi, its Wi-Fi interface uses a Media Access Control address, usually shortened to MAC address. This address identifies the interface for communication on the local network.

A MAC address is not the same thing as an IP address. They work at different parts of networking and can change for different reasons. For this article, the important point is simple: the Wi-Fi network needs a way to distinguish one connected interface from another, and a MAC address is part of that process.

Traditionally, a Wi-Fi interface had a hardware-associated MAC address that remained stable. If a device presented that same address wherever it went, different Wi-Fi networks could repeatedly see the same identifier.

That persistence is useful for recognition, but it also creates a privacy issue.

Imagine that a phone used exactly the same Wi-Fi MAC address at home, at a hotel, at an airport, and in a café. The address would not reveal the owner’s name by itself, but it could provide a consistent label for that device.

A network operator or observer with suitable data could potentially associate repeated appearances of that label with network activity or locations. The problem is not that a MAC address contains a travel history. It does not. The problem is that a stable identifier can make separate observations easier to correlate.

Private-address features reduce this particular kind of persistence by avoiding use of the same hardware MAC address everywhere.

A private address changes the identifier presented to Wi-Fi

With MAC randomization, the operating system generates an alternative MAC address and uses it for Wi-Fi communication instead of exposing the hardware address in the same way on every network.

A common approach is to use a different private address for different Wi-Fi networks. Some systems can also rotate a private address over time in certain circumstances. The exact policy depends on the operating system, version, network configuration, and device management settings.

This means your phone might present one private MAC address on your home Wi-Fi and another on a café network. Those networks then have less opportunity to recognize the phone simply because it reused one identical MAC address in both places.

The word randomized can be misleading if it suggests that the address necessarily changes every time the device reconnects. Many implementations deliberately keep an address stable for a particular network for some period so ordinary network features continue to work predictably. Other modes or systems may rotate it.

The useful mental model is therefore not “a new address on every connection.” It is an operating-system-managed Wi-Fi identity that does not have to be the device’s permanent hardware identity.

Why your home router may notice the change

Home routers commonly organize information about connected devices by MAC address. A router may associate an address with a device name, an IP address assignment, access rules, usage information, or a simple entry in its connected-device list.

If your phone starts presenting a different private MAC address, the router cannot automatically assume that the new address belongs to the same physical phone. From the router’s perspective, it may look like a different network interface has appeared.

You might therefore notice a familiar device listed as new, an old device entry remaining after the device has changed addresses, or a router notification announcing a new connection.

This does not necessarily mean an unknown person joined your Wi-Fi. Before drawing that conclusion, compare the device information shown by the router with the Wi-Fi address currently reported by your phone or computer. The names and locations of these settings vary between platforms and software versions.

Address-based router settings can need attention

Private addresses matter most when a network relies on a particular MAC address remaining stable.

For example, a router can be configured to give a specific local IP address to a particular MAC address. If the device later presents a different MAC address, that reservation may no longer match it. Similarly, parental controls, allowlists, device labels, or other local rules that identify equipment by MAC address may treat the new address as a different device.

This is not a failure of Wi-Fi. The network rule and the privacy feature are simply using the same identifier for different purposes: the network expects it to stay fixed, while the privacy feature is designed to reduce unnecessary persistence.

If you need an address-based rule, first check whether the device offers a private address that stays fixed for that Wi-Fi network. That can preserve the cross-network privacy benefit while giving your own network a stable identifier. Available options and terminology vary by platform.

A private Wi-Fi address does not hide all network activity

Changing a MAC address solves a specific identification problem. It should not be treated as a general anonymity feature.

Once connected, a device still communicates through the network. Websites, online services, apps, account logins, IP addresses, browser data, and other signals can identify or distinguish activity in ways that have nothing to do with the Wi-Fi MAC address.

The Wi-Fi network itself can also observe information needed to provide the connection. Using a private MAC address does not make the device invisible to the access point it is actively using.

So the benefit is best stated precisely: private Wi-Fi addresses reduce reliance on one persistent hardware identifier for recognizing a device across Wi-Fi observations. They do not erase every other identifier.

Private addresses do not normally change your internet speed

A MAC address identifies a network interface; it is not a speed setting. Replacing a hardware MAC address with a valid private one does not inherently increase or reduce the bandwidth of the Wi-Fi radio or the internet service.

If a connection behaves differently after changing the setting, the cause is more likely to be how that particular network handles the new address. A network might have address-based access rules, registration, filtering, or configuration that needs to recognize the new identifier.

That distinction is useful when troubleshooting. A private address is usually not a performance control, but it can affect network systems that depend on device identity.

When should you leave the feature enabled?

For ordinary Wi-Fi use, leaving private-address functionality enabled is generally sensible when the device and network support it. It provides a privacy benefit without requiring you to manage a permanent identifier on every network you visit.

There are cases where you may need to adjust the setting. A managed workplace or school network may have its own device-registration requirements. A home network may use MAC-based reservations or controls. Some specialized or older network systems may expect a stable address.

If a network has trouble recognizing your device, avoid immediately disabling privacy features everywhere. First determine whether the setting can be changed only for the affected Wi-Fi network, or whether a stable private address is available. Modern operating systems often manage private-address behavior per network, although the exact choices vary.

If the device is managed by an organization, its administrator may also control the setting.

What to remember when a device suddenly looks new

When a router says a new device has joined, the message is worth checking, but “new to the router” does not always mean “new physical device.” The router may simply be seeing a new network identifier.

A private Wi-Fi address separates the identity used on a Wi-Fi network from the device’s fixed hardware identity. That reduces the usefulness of one persistent MAC address for linking the device across networks, but it can also affect router features that use MAC addresses as permanent labels.

Once you understand that trade-off, unfamiliar router entries become easier to interpret: verify the address your device is currently using, keep private addressing enabled where practical, and update address-based network rules when a legitimate device’s Wi-Fi identity changes.
