An IP rating can make a phone, speaker, smartwatch, or pair of earbuds sound ready for almost any wet or dusty situation. A label such as IP67 or IP68 is useful, but it describes performance under defined tests rather than a promise that the device can handle every kind of exposure.

The code becomes much easier to use once you separate its two parts. The first digit concerns protection against access and solid objects, including dust at the higher levels. The second concerns water. Each part represents a particular test category, so the number is more like a compact test result than a general durability score.

That distinction matters when deciding whether a device is suitable for rain, a dusty workshop, a poolside table, or another everyday setting.

IP is a classification for an enclosure

IP ratings come from IEC 60529, an international standard for degrees of protection provided by electrical enclosures. In practical terms, the enclosure is the outer barrier that helps keep unwanted solid objects and water away from parts that need protection.

A typical code starts with the letters IP followed by two characters. In IP67, the 6 is the solid-particle protection digit and the 7 is the water-protection digit.

An X can appear when a protection level is not specified for one of those positions. For example, IPX7 states a water-protection level but does not state a solid-particle level in that code. The X should not be read as zero protection. It means that position does not provide a rated value.

This makes comparisons more precise. Two products can have similar-looking labels while making different claims.

The first digit covers solid objects and dust

The first digit runs through levels that describe protection against access to hazardous parts and the entry of solid foreign objects. For consumer electronics, the upper dust-related levels are often the most visible.

An IP5X enclosure is dust-protected. Some dust can enter under the test conditions, but not enough to interfere with satisfactory operation or safety as defined by the standard.

An IP6X enclosure is dust-tight under its specified test. This is a stronger dust-ingress classification.

That does not turn an IP6X phone into equipment for every dusty environment. The rating addresses enclosure ingress under standardized conditions. It does not, by itself, describe resistance to scratches, abrasive particles rubbing against exposed surfaces, chemical contamination, or damage to an uncovered connector caused by debris.

For everyday use, the first digit is most useful as a statement about how well the enclosure limits solid-particle entry, not as a complete measure of ruggedness.

The second digit describes a specific kind of water exposure

The water digit needs extra care because different levels represent different test conditions. Water can reach a device as drips, spray, jets, or immersion, and those exposures do not stress an enclosure in exactly the same manner.

For example, IPX7 covers temporary immersion under defined conditions. The standard test uses immersion in water with the lowest point of an enclosure less than 850 mm tall positioned 1,000 mm below the water surface, for 30 minutes.

IPX8 covers continuous immersion under conditions agreed for the product and more severe than the IPX7 test. This means an IPX8 label alone does not tell you one universal depth and duration for every product. The manufacturer’s stated conditions matter.

This is a useful detail when comparing phones or watches. Two IP68 devices can carry the same code while their documented immersion conditions differ.

Water-jet tests are also distinct from immersion tests. A product rated for immersion should not automatically be treated as suitable for every forceful jet or high-pressure stream unless its stated ratings cover that exposure too.

A larger number is not a universal durability score

It is tempting to read IP68 as simply tougher than IP67 in every situation. The code is more specific than that.

The first digits can be compared within the solid-protection part of the system. Water digits also indicate defined protection levels, but some higher-numbered water tests address a different form of exposure rather than serving as a blanket replacement for every other condition.

This matters outside a test lab. A device might tolerate a specified immersion test yet still be a poor candidate for pressurized water. Moving water can place different pressure on seals and openings than still water does.

The safest interpretation is to match the stated rating and manufacturer guidance to the exposure you actually expect. Do not turn the two-digit code into a single all-purpose toughness score.

Water resistance is not the same as waterproof

Consumer product descriptions often use casual language around water, but an IP rating has narrower meaning. It shows that an enclosure met specified ingress tests. It does not establish permanent immunity to water in every environment.

Real use can differ from standardized testing. Seals can age. A drop can deform an enclosure. Repairs can disturb adhesives or gaskets. Ports can contain debris. Temperature changes can also create conditions that differ from a controlled test.

Liquids are not interchangeable either. Salt water, chlorinated water, soap, drinks, oils, and other substances can behave differently from the water used for a rating test and can leave conductive or corrosive residue.

A rating therefore gives useful evidence about a defined level of protection, but the device maker’s care instructions still matter.

IP ratings do not cover every kind of damage

An IP code focuses on ingress protection. It should not be used as evidence for unrelated forms of durability.

A high IP rating does not tell you how well a screen survives a fall, how easily a case scratches, how much force a connector can withstand, or how a battery handles extreme temperatures. Those are separate engineering questions.

The same separation applies to water damage after an impact. A phone can look intact after being dropped while a seal or frame has changed enough to affect water resistance. The original IP classification describes the tested product design and condition; it cannot confirm the condition of an individual device after years of wear or physical damage.

This is one reason an older device deserves more caution around water even when its model originally carried a strong rating.

Use the full product specification, not just the badge

When water or dust exposure matters to a purchase, start with the IP code and then read the manufacturer’s conditions attached to it.

For an IP68 phone, check the stated immersion depth and duration. For earbuds intended for exercise, check whether the product specifies protection relevant to sweat or water exposure and follow its cleaning guidance. For an outdoor speaker, consider the expected combination of rain, dust, ports, charging covers, and physical handling.

Also check whether accessories share the same protection. A charging case, cable, removable cover, or external adapter can have a different rating or no rating at all. One protected component does not transfer its enclosure rating to everything connected to it.

If a device gets wet, follow its maker’s drying and charging instructions. A water-resistance rating is not a reason to connect power while a port or connector is still wet.

Read the two digits as separate promises

The most useful habit is simple: split the IP code into its solid-protection and water-protection parts, then match each part to the conditions you care about.

IP67, IP68, and similar labels provide meaningful information because they refer to standardized enclosure tests. They become misleading only when treated as a universal score for water, dust, drops, wear, and every other form of damage.

For a purchase or an everyday decision, use the rating as one piece of evidence. Pair it with the manufacturer’s exact conditions and the real environment the device will face.
