What Screen Brightness Nits Mean in Everyday Use

A phone, laptop, or monitor may be advertised with a screen brightness of 500, 1,000, or even more nits. The larger number looks easy to compare, but it does not mean the display will run at that brightness all the time or that it will automatically look better in every situation. A nit is a unit used to describe luminance: how much visible light comes from a surface in a particular direction. For everyday display comparisons, the useful mental model is simpler: more nits means the screen is capable of producing more light per unit of visible area under the stated test conditions.
