A monitor can be powered on, connected by a cable, and still show No Signal. The message is easy to misread: it usually does not mean that the monitor itself has no power, and it does not prove that the cable is broken.

It means the monitor is not receiving a usable video signal on the input it is currently trying to display.

That distinction makes troubleshooting much simpler. Instead of changing settings at random, you can treat the display setup as a short chain and find the point where the video signal stops reaching the screen.

Think of the display connection as a signal chain

A typical external-display setup has four important parts:

  1. The computer or other source creates a video output.
  2. A video port sends that output.
  3. A cable, adapter, dock, or hub carries it.
  4. The monitor receives it through the selected input.

The monitor can show an image only when that chain works from end to end.

This explains why a physically connected cable is not enough. A cable can be firmly inserted while the computer is not producing video through that port, an adapter is incompatible with the required connection, or the monitor is listening to a different input.

The useful question is therefore not simply, “Is the cable connected?” It is, “Is a usable video signal reaching the monitor’s selected input?”

The monitor may be listening to the wrong input

Many monitors have more than one video input, such as HDMI and DisplayPort, and some have multiple ports of the same type. The monitor normally displays one selected input at a time.

If the computer is connected to HDMI 2 while the monitor is set to HDMI 1, the physical connection can be perfectly good and the screen can still report no signal. Some monitors automatically search for an active source, while others stay on the selected input or behave differently depending on their settings.

This is one of the simplest things to check because it separates a source-selection problem from a deeper connection problem. Use the monitor’s own controls to confirm that the selected input corresponds to the port where the cable is actually connected. Menu names vary by model.

A connected computer may not be sending video there

The other end of the chain matters just as much. A computer can be running normally without producing a usable signal on every display connector at every moment.

For example, an external display may not be detected correctly after waking from sleep, a laptop may be connected through a dock that has not initialized properly, or a desktop cable may be attached to a video connector that is not active in that computer’s configuration.

A computer can also be working while its display subsystem has not finished starting. During boot, sleep and wake transitions, or hardware detection, the signal can disappear temporarily and then return.

If the monitor works with another source, that is useful evidence: the monitor can receive video, so attention can move toward the original computer, its output port, or the devices between them.

Cables, adapters, docks, and hubs add more possible break points

A direct cable creates a relatively short signal path. Adding an adapter, docking station, KVM switch, or USB hub creates additional links, and each link must support the display connection being attempted.

Connector shape alone does not guarantee capability. This is especially important with USB-C, because USB-C describes the connector and can be used for different combinations of data, power, and video features. A USB-C port, cable, or adapter does not automatically support every display function merely because the plug fits.

The same principle applies to conversion between connector types. Some conversions are straightforward in a particular direction or configuration, while others require suitable active electronics. Compatibility depends on the source, adapter, display, and video modes involved.

For troubleshooting, the practical lesson is simple: reduce the number of links when possible. If a monitor works when connected directly but fails through a dock, the direct test has narrowed the problem considerably.

A bad cable does not have to look damaged

Video cables contain conductors and connectors that must carry high-speed electrical signals reliably. A cable can fail internally even when its outer jacket looks normal. A connector can also be incompletely seated, contaminated, or mechanically worn.

Cable problems are not always all-or-nothing. Some faults cause a complete loss of signal, while others appear only at certain display modes or when the connector moves.

Testing with a known-working cable is more informative than repeatedly unplugging the same unknown cable. Likewise, trying another port can help distinguish a port problem from a cable problem.

Avoid forcing a connector or repeatedly bending a cable at a sharp angle to make it work. An intermittent connection is a reason to inspect or replace the failing part, not a stable workaround.

Display settings can matter after a connection is established

A monitor and source have to settle on a video mode the display can handle. Modern systems usually detect display capabilities and choose an appropriate mode automatically, but detection and configuration can occasionally go wrong.

Resolution and refresh rate are two relevant properties. Resolution describes the pixel dimensions of the image, while refresh rate describes how often the display is updated each second. Supported combinations depend on the monitor, source hardware, connection type, and equipment in between.

If a screen stopped working immediately after a display-setting change, returning to a known-supported mode can be useful. The exact recovery method depends on the operating system and device, so it is better to use that platform’s display controls or recovery guidance than to assume one universal menu path.

However, do not begin by changing resolution when the monitor has never detected the source at all. First check the simpler parts of the signal chain.

A systematic test is faster than changing everything at once

When several things are changed together, a successful result does not tell you which change fixed the problem. Testing one link at a time gives you useful evidence.

A practical order is:

  1. Confirm that both the source device and monitor are powered and awake.
  2. Confirm the monitor is set to the input that matches the connected port.
  3. Reseat the cable at both ends without forcing the connectors.
  4. If possible, bypass docks, hubs, switches, and adapters with a direct connection.
  5. Try a cable that is known to work for video.
  6. Try another compatible video port on the source or monitor.
  7. Test the monitor with another source, or test the source with another display.
  8. If the connection previously worked and then failed after sleep or a software change, restart the relevant devices before moving to more invasive troubleshooting.

Each test divides the problem. If a second computer works through the same monitor input and cable, the monitor and cable are less likely to be the cause. If the original computer works on a different monitor using the same output, the first monitor or its input path deserves more attention.

No single test proves every component is perfect, but controlled substitutions are much more useful than guessing.

What the message does not tell you

No Signal is a symptom, not a diagnosis. From that message alone, you cannot conclude that the graphics hardware has failed, the cable is defective, or the monitor is broken.

It also does not necessarily mean the computer has crashed. A laptop can continue running on its built-in screen while an external-display path has a problem. A desktop may be running even though its video output is unavailable.

Similarly, replacing a cable with a more expensive one is not automatically a solution. The replacement needs to support the connection you are using and be in good working order; price by itself does not identify the fault.

A monitor says No Signal when it cannot use a video signal from the input it is trying to display. The cable is only one part of that path.

Think from end to end: source, output port, cable or intermediate device, monitor input, and selected source. Check the simplest links first, then substitute one component at a time.
